The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu, has reportedly resigned from his position. According to credible sources, Adamu tendered his resignation by sending a letter to the Presidency prior to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's return from the African Union (AU) meeting in Kenya.
The letter was said to be addressed to President Tinubu but was sent to the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, due to the President's absence.
Sources have revealed that Adamu's resignation came as a result of a perceived plot to embarrass him during the upcoming party meetings.
However, it has been denied that President Tinubu personally asked for Adamu's resignation. The National Caucus and National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings of the party were initially scheduled for July 10 and 11 but were later postponed to tomorrow and Wednesday.
According to a founding member of the party, Adamu resigned upon learning that influential figures close to the President were mobilizing against him ahead of the meetings and reportedly collecting signatures for his impeachment. Adamu chose to resign to spare himself from potential humiliation.
When contacted, Adamu declined to comment on the matter until President Tinubu's return from the AU meeting. It is worth noting that Adamu had previously declared former Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the consensus candidate for the party's presidential primaries, which led to divisions and the eventual opening of the race for the party's presidential ticket, won by Tinubu. Adamu also publicly disagreed with the list of principal officers announced by the Senate President and Speaker recently, which resulted in a meeting between Adamu, Tinubu, and the National Secretary of the party, Senator Iyiola Omisore, to resolve the matter.
