A Prominent member of the Arewa Consultative forum who chose to remain anonymous said the demand by the south to produce the Senate President and the 10th chairman of the national assembly can be seen as selfish if closely examined.
He said the South is already controlling the executive arm and the judiciary, the only arm of government left to be contested is the legislature, which in all sense of justice, equity, and fairness should go to the North, most especially Northwest, the zone that has produced more votes for the party than any other in the just concluded elections.
The elder statesman also told Abuja Network News that, " We in the North sacrificed our urge and hunger for power to support the south for the presidency, then I think the south deserves to reciprocate the gesture this time around.”
When asked about religious considerations and the need to balance the positions along religious lines, the elder statesman said" in as much as religious considerations are a valid reason, one cannot divorce regional consideration because of religious considerations. “
“ Though I believe that both issues can be looked in and addressed, and both sides most make sacrifices for of the country.”
It can be recalled that the governing party has already shown support for the candidature of Senator Godswill Akpabio from the South South zone to fill the vacant position of the Senate President on the 13th of June 2023. But some party stalwarts, stakeholders and leaders at various levels continue to show concerns and outward rejection of the zoning formulae on the principles of justice, equity, and fairness.
As we inch closer to the 13th, the slated date for the inauguration of the Senate, Nigerians are keenly watching and hoping that all the politicking and the likes should end in the benefit of Nigeria and Nigerians.
