Contrary to reports making rounds on the media the Central Bank Of Nigeria has denied issuing circular to deposit money banks to accept 500 and 1000 Naira notes as deposits.
In a statement signed by the director cooperate communication Mr. Osita Nwanisobi the CBN is quoted as saying " the attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria has been drawn to some fake and unauthorized message quoting the Central Bank as having authorized the deposit money banks to collect the old N500 and N1000 Naira notes".
" .... For the avoidance of doubt and in line with the President's broadcast of 16 February 2023 the CBN has been directed to ONLY reissue and recirculate N200 old banknotes... ". The CBN added.
This is coming against the backdrop that Kaduna,Kano, Jigawa, Lagos and many more state Governors are insisted on abiding by the rulings of the Supreme Court which extended the status of the old Naira notes as legal tender beyond the CBN's February 10 deadline.
Similarly the states governors have rejected the President's oder which recognized only N200 old banknotes as legal tender and insists the President's directive was in outright violation of a supreme court oder which bars the Federal Government from continuing with the policy pending the hearing and determination of the ongoing suit before it.
Major stakeholder from across board has condemn what they term as apparent violation of a supreme court oder which lawyers termed as contempt of Court.
