Ordinarily, the State Security Service that many refer to as DSS (Department of State Service) does not ordinarily invoke it's power to investigate financial crimes unless such is of a scale capable of becoming a threat to the existence of the State. When you see the DSS on the frontline in that manner, just know that there is fire on the mountain.
I have read many comments some of which are ignorant, sentimental and at worst unpatriotic about the DSS "witch haunting" of Emefiele. I ask myself, what does the DSS need to do with the witch that it will have to hunt in Emefiele's coven?. This witch must have turned itself into a vampire for DSS to come out to stop the blood-sucking monster of our national treasury. Too many mysteries for demystification.
As far as the saga in the CBN is concerned, as DSS often operates, the issue here for determination is not necessarily, at first, the actor but the act. When the DSS is dealing with a situation, they concentrate on the act first as it affects the internal security of the State. They make sure at first that your criminality does not cause any damage to the nation. Then, they pin down the actor(s) when they are sure the act has been mitigated and they make sure no remnant is left behind to continue the damage. I wonder how many of us ever imagined the Kenya operation was going to be that "easy" to humble that fugitive. No one even knew something was going on. That is how stealthy the DSS can be. If you don't know what the owl on the logo of the Service represents, then you don't know anything about precision targeting.
When I read that explicit detailed "report" submitted to Mr. President on the allegations against Emefiele, it just further convinced me that DSS has never been known to be frivolous with their operations. I am only waiting to read any such counter or defence from the man in the eye of the storm.
The interesting thing about financial crimes control and corruption management is that virtually all the security Agencies have in their Establishment Act, one clause or another that gives them the responsibility to handle certain financial infractions especially the ones committed by government officials. On CBN governor Emefiele's financial crime and terrorism financing allegations leveled against him by the DSS, many may be wondering why the DSS is the one leading in that cause, except of course it is within the mandate of the Service to do so.
ICPC and EFCC are no doubt specialized Agencies on financial crimes management and corruption control, but before they were created, NDLEA was responsible for the handling of similar financial crimes such as advance fee fraud that we all call "419". If you know how General Bamaiyi of the then NDLEA handled the 419 guys of 1990s, you will know that the current reigning "yahoo yahoo" champion are enjoying.
The DSS in it's mandate has rather a ubiquitous coverage of almost anything that threatens our internal security and continuous existence as a nation. And now that the EFCC is busy dealing with the "yahoo yahoo" menace, keeping records of number of convictions in that area, the DSS can always compliment on other aspects of financial crimes especially on the threat to our internal and external security and most especially if those who committed the crime appear to be out of the reach of the "specialized" Agencies to dare to investigate the "godfathers". Such godfatherism doesn't work with the DSS unless the C-in-C is the "godfather". Don't mind me, I play too much with words...lol.
I have always seen the DSS as the most "central nervous system" of the Nigeria security architecture. If you don't know that Agency and how "smart" it is, you will not understand how useful it has been to the stability of this country. Underrate the DSS at your own peril.
In conclusion, it is safe to say that it is too early for the cock to crow, the day is still breaking and the egg is just hatching although slowly but surely - whether the chick will be black or white, nobody knows but time will tell.
Please, don't bet on the sweetness/bitterness of the food you have never tasted, leave the assessment to the chef who is doing the cooking until you are properly served. The aroma that you are perceiving now is not enough to make you pass a judgement in condemnation of the DSS. But all I can say affirmatively is that DSS does not engage in frivolous operations.
